Two students were taken into police custody after administrators responding to complaints found a handgun in a garbage can at Shelton High School on Tuesday.

Shelton Police Chief Darrin Moody tells KBKW that at approximately 10:00 am School Officials were notified of a student possibly in possession of a handgun on the Shelton High School campus. The reporting student had seen what appeared to be a handgun in the backpack of another student while in class and reported this to school staff. Within 5 minutes of the original notification, two students were in custody and a loaded small caliber handgun was recovered from a garbage can on campus. The two students that had been in possession of the gun were removed from campus and transported to the Shelton Police Department. Both students were booked in Mason County Juvenile Hall for being in possession of a weapon on the school campus.

Moody said, “The Shelton Police Department, Shelton School District, and Staff of Shelton High School applaud the responsible actions of the student that reported this to school staff for “doing the right thing for the right reasons”.
