A slow speed chase ended in the arrest of a tortoise in Hoquiam yesterday. Officer Jerad Spaur with the Hoquiam Police Department posted photos of the African spurred tortoise on Facebook shortly after the chase, with the caption “Soo.. This was awesome.”
Sergeant Shane Krohn said that at 2:24 P.M. Wednesday Spaur responded to the report of a large tortoise in the 400 block of Chenault Avenue. He was apprehended after a brief but slow foot pursuit, Krohn said in the press release that “Despite his hard exterior he surrendered without a fight; handcuffs were not necessary.”
The tortoise was detained and was transported to the HPD animal shelter where he was booked.
Further investigation revealed the tortoise’s name was George. George is 15 years old and a native of Africa that weighs about 60 pounds. George resides in the 400 block of Eklund with his brother. His brother remained in the enclosure which George had escaped from by chewing his way out.
George was reunited with his owner after a short period.
