The Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office is warning of a new phone scam where the callers try to convince their victims that they have their child. Chief Criminal Deputy Steve Shumate said that at 11:19 am Wednesday morning, a Central Park resident called to report receiving a suspicious phone call that was quite alarming.

Shumate said “Our resident advised that when he answered the call, he could hear a young girl crying and then say, ‘daddy, daddy’ several times. Our resident then heard a man call him by his correct first name, and then say, ‘I have your daughter, if you want her…’ The phone call then disconnected.”

The resident immediately called the Central Park School and verified that his daughter was in school, then called 911.

The phone call was from phone number +52 6563227320. This phone number appears to be from Mexico. When deputies attempted to call the number back, it was no longer in service.

The parents of this child were obviously very upset by this phone call. It appears that other similar calls have been received in Aberdeen as well as Thurston County. In some of the other calls that were similar to this one, the suspect had identified himself as “Batman” and there was a request for ransom.

Lieutenant Kevin Darst with the Aberdeen Police Department talked to another victim who said that the same people called her phone and her daughter’s phone. Darst said the Aberdeen woman is related to the Central Park man and shares a phone bill. All three people share the same phone account and received calls around the same time.

Darst said “I located the Aberdeen call from yesterday: SR 16-A22971. I talked to the complainant. She related that the same people that called the person in the county called her phone and her daughter’s phone.”

The woman told Darst that the girl on the phone sounded distraught, but she knew that it was a lie, so she didn’t go along with it. She talked to her other family members and confirmed that everyone is accounted for. The phone call showed up on her phone as a call from Mexico and when she called it back, it was disconnected.
