Police and Coast Guard personnel searched the Hoquiam River yesterday after a stolen vehicle investigation turned into a foot pursuit, then a rescue in East Hoquiam.

Sergent Jeff Salstrom with the Hoquiam Police Department tells us that officers were in the 1400 block of Broadway, South of Woodlawn, just after 8 a.m. Wednesday morning when they spotted a 35-year-old Hoquiam man that they knew to have an outstanding felony warrant from the Washington State Department of Corrections Office. When an officer attempted to contact the man, he ran to the Hoquiam River and jumped in, attempting to swim across. The subject appeared to be wearing a heavy coat and backpack. Salstrom said he was last seen clinging to a piling before an officer observed him go under and not surface.

A search and rescue operation was initiated, with vessels from the Cosmopolis Fire Department, Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office, and a civilian participating. The United States Coast Guard dispatched a helicopter from Astoria.

Officials searched until approximately 3 p.m. but were unable to locate the man. The search will resume Thursday with the assistance from the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office dive team.
