The Democrats took a strong lead in a state Senate race that will determine the balance of power at the Washington Capitol.

Manka Dhingra was leading Republican Jinyoung Lee Englund with 55 percent of the vote last night.

Republicans, with the help of a Democrat who caucuses with them, currently control the Senate by a single seat. Democrats hold a slim majority in the House.

Washington Governor Jay Inslee who is also a Democratic said in a statement last night “I send hearty congratulations to Sen.-elect Manka Dhingra on her decisive win tonight. It was a hard-fought race, and Manka’s bold ideas and positive vision for the district resonated with voters.

“We’ve had good bipartisan successes in Olympia over the past few years and that will continue. I also look forward to action on some issues that have stalled for too long.

“Manka is a smart, big-thinker who will bring her creativity and energy to the legislative process. She will represent the 45th Legislative District well, and I know she will be a breath of fresh air in Olympia.”

If the results hold, Washington will join Oregon and California with Democratic one-party rule in both legislative chambers and the governor’s office.
