Aberdeen Police Chief Steve Shumate is commending one of his own after an officer talked a child off of the roof of Steven’s Elementary school yesterday.
Shumate said they were called to the school on South Farragut Street around 12:30 pm Monday afternoon. The first on the scene was Aberdeen School Resource Officer Bob Green who learned that a child had climbed up on the roof of the school.
As additional officers arrived, the Aberdeen Fire Department assisted Officer Gary Sexton as he climbed onto the roof. Talking with the student Officer Sexton learned that they had a number of challenges, one of which was a certain subject in class.
The child agreed to let Officer Sexton help him with his school work and they climbed down. Officer Sexton spent some time with the child in a classroom on the subject of concern before he was released to his guardian.
The School District is now taking measures to prevent this from occurring again.
Shumate said, “I appreciate the response by all involved, particularly Officer Sexton for taking the time to talk with this child during and after this event.”
