Hoquiam Fire Department Captain Matt Miller will be appointed to Assistant Fire Chief effective November 1, 2020. A joint press release from the department and Mayor Ben Winkelman said that Captain Miller participated in an executive-level interview on September 30, 2020 and the interview panel determined that Captain Miller was ideally suited to assume this key leadership role within the fire department.

Captain Miller began his career with the Hoquiam Fire Department in March 1999 and has held every rank within the department which makes him ideally suited to transition to this executive leadership role. He has also been a key member of the department’s training committee and is well respected both within the Hoquiam Fire Department as well as by the surrounding fire service and law enforcement agencies.

Interim Fire Chief Tom Hubbard said Miller has been an integral part of the Aberdeen and Hoquiam Regional Fire Authority planning process currently under consideration by the cities of Aberdeen and Hoquiam.

Miller’s promotion to Assistant Fire Chief will allow him to dedicate more time to explore both the challenges and opportunities that lay ahead for both fire departments. His leadership will greatly benefit both the Hoquiam and Aberdeen Fire Departments during this time of transition.
