Hoquiam Police closed 22nd street from Simpson to Bay Avenue this morning after a single-fatality car wreck. At the scene, it appeared the car was driving West on the Port Dock Road and failed to negotiate the corner at 22nd street.

Sgt. Brian Dayton said that it was reported at 1:52 this morning. Paramedics declared the driver deceased at the scene. Officers were using the 3D imaging system to map out the crime scene before working to clear the area.

Sgt. Jeff Salstrom later reported a 2004 Chevrolet Impala had been traveling westbound on Bay Avenue and failed to negotiate the turn onto 22nd Street. The vehicle continued through a chain link fence and struck an industrial pipeline, entrapping the driver. The pipeline is no longer in use and did not contain any hazardous materials. Hoquiam Fire Department personnel arrived and determined the driver, was deceased. He was the only occupant of the vehicle.

Grays Harbor Coroner Lane Youmans said later this afternoon that the driver has been identified as Jody Lapinski, 45, of Hoquiam. His family has been notified. An autopsy has been scheduled for this Saturday.

The HPD Collision Investigation Team was called out to the location. They are currently processing the scene using the regional FARO laser mapping tool. The investigation into the causing circumstances of the collision is ongoing and a final determination will not be made until toxicology tests results are obtained.
