A convicted felon in Hoquiam was arrested after police say he was reported displaying a handgun to other drivers on Ontario street. Sgt. Jeff Salstrom with the Hoquiam Police Department said that at about 5:09 p.m. Wednesday evening officers were called to a report of a subject driving southbound on Ontario Street displaying a handgun. The reporting person gave a very detailed description of the suspect vehicle, a green Ford Ranger, including a partial license plate.
Several minutes later, Sgt. Jeff Salstrom, located the vehicle parked in the 600 block of 28th Street. It was occupied by one male subject in the driver’s seat. Sgt. Salstrom made contact with the subject who was uncooperative. The subject denied having a firearm in the vehicle. Sgt. Salstrom continued to communicate with the subject attempting to gain his cooperation.
Officer Don Grossi arrived on scene and approached the truck from the opposite side. He observed a handgun partially concealed under the center armrest, near the subject’s seat belt release.
Officer Grossi was able to secure the firearm and the suspect, a 35 year old rural Hoquiam man, was taken into custody. The 9mm handgun was found to be loaded. It was determined the suspect is a twice convicted felon and is ineligible to possess firearms. Charges will be referred to the Grays Harbor County Prosecutor’s Office for Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.
