Fire damage was limited to the roof of the Westport Water Department Building yesterday, thanks in part to the quick actions of their department supervisor.
Westport Fire Chief Dennis Benn tells us that the supervisor was driving by the water tower at about 5:15 Thursday morning and spotted smoke and flames on the roof of the main building.
The employee activated the building’s fire alarm and began to work on the fire from the outside with an extinguisher. Volunteer crews arrived at the building off of Montesano Street South within 5 minutes and were able to knock down the flames quickly.
No injuries were reported, Benn said the cause is still under investigation but they believe that a mechanical failure in an emergency generator might have sparked the fire.
