South Bend, WA. – The Pacific County Sheriff’s Office has been notified by some alert citizens that many political campaign signs seem to be disappearing in various areas within our county. The Sheriff’s Office would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that stealing political campaign signs in the state of Washington is indeed a crime.

RCW 29A.84.040
Political advertising, removing or defacing.
A person who removes or defaces lawfully placed political advertising including yard signs or billboards without authorization is guilty of a misdemeanor punishable to the same extent as a misdemeanor that is punishable under RCW 9A.20.021. The defacement or removal of each item constitutes a separate violation.

Beyond being punishable by law, stealing or defacing campaign signs really thwarts democracy. Civic minded people work hard to install these signs to ensure there freedoms of speech are heard. If you see any suspicious activity involving this type of crime, please report it to the Sheriff’s Office.
