An arrest has been made during the investigation of a fire in Shelton, the Shelton Police Department said in a press release that on 5/21/2016 just after midnight the Mason County Communications Center received several calls regarding a possible structure fire at the corner of Grove St. and Second St. in the City of Shelton. Within two minutes Shelton Police Officers arrived at the scene and found a fully engulfed structure fire. The building was the site of an abandoned hotel that had become a and common place for illicit narcotic activity and homeless encampments.

Due to the fire and the age of the decaying structure the building quickly collapsed, not allowing emergency personnel to inspect the interior for possible fire victims or evidence.

On 5/25/2016 Shelton Police Detectives were contacted regarding a possible suspicious person that was around the building at the time the fire started. Detectives working with Fire
Department personnel were able to identify a suspect based upon video evidence obtained from a nearby business owner. Based upon the fact that the fire was now a criminal act and a suspect identified as well as the possibility of further evidence, the large amount of debris at the fire scene was sifted and removed immediately by Shelton Public Works crews.

On 5/26/2016 Shelton Police Officers located and detained the suspect identified by Detectives regarding the fire. The suspect is 57 yr. old Shelton resident and was known to law enforcement from prior contacts. The suspect was booked at Mason County jail pending a variety of charges related to the fire, including reckless burning, pending charges and further investigation, his name is not released at this time.
