The Aberdeen School Board has approved a plan that will mean layoffs for some staff. More than 150 people attended the board’s regular meeting yesterday, with heartfelt public comment from parents and teachers. The school board voted to proceed with the plan as presented.

One staff member said under conditions of anonymity that, “It was an emotional evening with Board members sharing how difficult it is to be the decision makers in this process of developing a balanced budget.”

District Superintendent Alicia Henderson and the district’s HR director will be formally notifying the staff members who are directly impacted today. Henderson’s proposal will reduce the district’s staff by a total of 46 through both attrition and layoffs in the 2019-2020 school year.

Once all staff members who are affected have been informed of the decisions, the district hopes to issue a more-detailed summary of the changes by the end of the week.
