An Aberdeen man was arrested after police say his car struck the Simpson Avenue Bridge then rolled in Hoquiam Saturday night.

Hoquiam police didn’t have to go far to respond. Sgt. Jeff Salstrom said officers called to the scene on the street that runs underneath the bridge around 11:20 Saturday night, less than a block from the Hoquiam Police Department.

A 2014 Kia Optima had struck the jersey barrier at the bridge approach and then rolled onto its side in the 1000 block of Simpson Avenue.

Witnesses pointed out the driver to arriving officers, as he attempted to flee on foot. A 20-year-old Aberdeen man was quickly apprehended, police said he showed indications of being under the influence of alcohol.

He was examined at the scene by paramedics and arrested for Driving Under the Influence. Salstrom said that after processing, the man’s blood alcohol level was found to be in excess of .26, over three times the limit of .08 in Washington state.
