Since its establishment in 1994 the Community Foundation has served as funder, collaborator, partner and observer in the many links of the chain that is community philanthropy. GHCF awarded over $1,410,000 in grants and scholarships in 2012 to many nonprofits as well as students pursuing post-secondary education. The organization has worked very hard to create a set of principles under which the Discretionary Grants Program is guided titled “Giving Priorities.” This document established four main areas of concern that the Foundation Board deemed most pressing in our community: Education, Health and Wellness, Arts, Culture and History, and Basic Needs. Awarding grants in these areas has begun our journey into addressing intergenerational poverty and building strong communities, but it is time to go further.
Grays Harbor Community Foundation is in a unique position to bring many stakeholders together to have a common discussion about what intergenerational poverty looks like in our area, the problems it creates and how to address the symptoms as well as the underlying causes of those issues.
The Community Foundation is looking forward to learning more about the true issues inside the community it serves and incorporating those findings into current and future grant-making practices. Strong, connected and educated networks between both organizations and individuals are the key to making an impact, and GHCF is working to strengthen those connections.
