Westport Aquarium to celebrate Dia de los Muertos (Pescado)

The Westport Aquarium is celebrating Dia de los Muertos – or Day of the Dead this Saturday evening, curator Kathryn Mersell tells it’s part of a grant to promote leaving less meat on the bone, decrease fish waste, and to keep the fisherman from feeding the sea lions which makes them more aggressive on the Westport docks.

The event is from 5:30-7:30 pm Saturday, admission to the aquarium is free. Mersell said the community is also invited to bring their own art or recipes to share for this event. Both will be published in next years cookbook, with permission.

Copies of the cookbook from last years art and fish recipes will be available at the event as well.

You can also help them with one of the biggest jigsaw puzzles as they begin to assemble a 39 foot

grey whale that washed ashore last summer, and the Aquarium has prepared for display, prepared but not reassebled yet. Mersell said “We have a chiropractor coming to help us get them all in the right order…come and help us organize them. We will have free arts and crafts and mini fish bone archaeological digs you can participate in. Free coupons will be given for special fish on the bone meals at local restaurants. Don’t miss the fun! Come support us in finding fun and useful ways to love and use the WHOLE FISH Saturday November 1st 2014 ”

Los Angeles Wine Competition brings Four wins for Westport Winery

Westport Winery earned four medals at the 2014 Los Angeles International Wine Competition where there were over 3000 entries from almost 1000 wineries. Night Watch, Duckleberry Grunt and Little Wild each earned silver medals while Pineapple Express received a bronze medal.

2013 Duck PosterDuckleberry Grunt is the winery’s most popular creation. It is a blend of Gewurztraminer and blueberries. Described in the tasting notes as “A lusty, mountain quaff you hide from your friends” the wine is suggested to be enjoyed with Wild Pacific Salmon. As a musical pairing the song Sharp Dressed Man by ZZ Top fits the bill. A portion of the proceeds from this wine benefits Grays Harbor Ducks Unlimited. Perhaps the winery is Grays Harbor’s Duckleberry Dynasty.

2013 Wild PosterLittle Wild was the winery’s first fruit blend consisting of Riesling and blackberries. The tasting notes suggest that this is “Something a bear sips in the woods or a girl glugs in the garden.” It pairs perfectly with the winery’s Vanilla Bean Cheesecake while listening to Secret Garden by Bruce Springsteen. This wine benefits the Grays Harbor and Pacific Master Gardeners

2013 Night PosterNight Watch is a new creation by winemaker Dana Roberts of Merlot and Chocolate. This wine will be released later this fall. The evaluation says it is “The culmination of sweet meadow flowers and dark orchard tilth.” It is delightfully paired with Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie and the song Give Me Everything by Pitbull. Partial proceeds from this wine are dedicated to Harbors Home Health & Hospice.

2013 Pineapple PosterPineapple Express, an exotic blend of pineapple, Gewurztraminer and Riesling is described as “Easy breezy, happiness in flip flops at the beach.” It is best enjoyed with one of the winery’s Giant Cinnamon Rolls (topped with buttercream frosting and macadamia nuts) while listening to Over The Rainbow by Brother Iz. This wine benefits the Grays Harbor YMCA.

With these awards Westport Winery has earned over 300 medals in just six years.

Westport Winery and Vineyards By-the-Sea with its unique sculpture garden, lavender labyrinth, musical fence, 9-hole executive golf course, giant chess set, outdoor scrabble game, and grape maze, is located on the corner of Highway 105 and South Arbor Road halfway between Aberdeen and Westport. Westport Winery was named Best of the Northwest Wine Tour in 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014.

Westport’s award-winning wines are exclusively available at the winery. The tasting room, gift shop, produce market, plant nursery and bakery are open daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The restaurant is open for lunch daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and for dinner on Friday and Saturday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. For more information contact Westport Winery at 360-648-2224 or visit the website at www.westportwinery.com.

The Gores Group and its partners bring a vast and diverse set of experience and we wish them well in this new venture. Finally, we would like to thank the Governor and the state and local elected officials in the community for their continued efforts and support for the re-opening of the mill.”

Hoquiam High School Takes Top Prize in National “Feed the Need” Program

“Students worked with local businesses to raise money and food; we did variety shows, staff competitions and many other creative things,” says Hoquiam teacher Bonnie Jump. “Hoquiam raised $12,000 in one day alone. It’s the most amazing display of generosity that one can witness in our tiny community.”

Said Jim Berk, CEO, Participant Media, “We are thrilled by the fantastic response to our call to action to help ‘Feed the Need.’ Our alliance with DoSomething.org for the social action campaign for The Soloist is a perfect example of how we leverage our entertainment projects to activate change and make a difference in the lives of others.”

“We set a goal of one million pounds of food, and these kids blew it out of the water,” said DoSomething CEO Nancy Lublin. “DoSomething provides the support, but the energy and initiative is all theirs.”

Opening April 24, The Soloist is the true story of the friendship between Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez (Robert Downey, Jr.) and Nathaniel Anthony Ayers (Jamie Foxx), a Juilliard-trained musician who is now homeless and playing his music on the streets of downtown L.A. www.takepart.com/thesoloist
