Aloe Blacc Doesn't Mind Being "The 'Wake Me Up' Guy"

By Andrea Dresdale

XIX Recordings/Interscope RecordsBy now, you’ve heard the song “Wake Me Up,” credited to Swedish deejay and producer Avicii, countless times, but you may still not know too much about Aloe Blacc, the guy who’s actually singing on the song, and who co-wrote it. But Aloe says he’s doesn’t mind that he’s still sort of anonymous: he’s just glad that “Wake Me Up” provided him with the perfect introduction to a whole group of potential new fans.

“‘Wake Me Up’ gave me a chance to showcase my voice and my lyric-writing and I think if people fell in love with that then there’s probably a residual effect for the other songs that I put into the marketplace,” he tells ABC News Radio. Another song you may not even realize is by Aloe is “I Need a Dollar,” the theme song …read more

Elton John Is the UK's Most Charitable Musician

By Andrea Dresdale

Michael Kovac/Getty Images for EJAFIn addition to recording and touring the world non-stop, Elton John spends much of his time raising money for charity. He’s so good at it that he’s now topped the Sunday TimesAnnual Giving List, which surveys which U.K. residents are the most generous when it comes to philanthropy.

According to the Times, Elton has directly raised or given more than 24 million pounds — that’s more than $40 million — in the past year, including raising more than $23 million alone for his AIDS foundations in the U.K. and the U.S.

One Direction is the second most generous musical act on the list, contributing $3.54 million to various causes, including money they raised for the British charity Comic Relief through the release of a single, and the money they raised for an anti-bullying campaign in the U.S. through sales of branded school supplies.

The members of Coldplay are third on the list of most charitable musicians, donating just under $440,000 to Sport Relief, another British charity. Their foundation, meanwhile, also made donations of about $3 million. Coldplay frontman Chris Martin …read more

By Andrea Dresdale

Cher.com/ABC/Randy Holmes/Interscope RecordsCher, Lady Gaga and Elton John are among the biggest gay icons in the world, so it’s not surprising that all three artists are being honored this year at the world’s biggest gay dance music festival, White Party Palm Springs.

The festival is marking its 25th anniversary this year by presenting special ICON Awards to those whose achievements “embody” its “spirit,” USA Today reports. Cher and Gaga are being recognized for being “pioneers” for the LGBT community, as well as for their artistry, activism and charity work. Elton and his partner David Furnish are being recognized for their activism as well as their philanthropy.

Other honorees include Bravo’s Andy Cohen, reality star Lisa Vanderpump, comedienne Kathy Griffin, director Bryan Singer, Lance Bass and Carmen Electra.

It’s not clear which, if any, of these stars will attend this year’s White Party Palm Springs, which takes place April 25-28. The awards will be given out April 26. Visit the event’s Facebook page for more details.
