One of the wooden grandstands at Pioneer Park in South Aberdeen was demolished yesterday. Parks and Recreation Director Stacie Barnum said the city had to tear down the stand closest to third base of the West field after rot was discovered in the 40-year-old structure.
Barnum replied to a video we posted of the demolition, “The grandstand had undergone many repairs through the years, and it was determined that the structure was no longer safe.”
They plan to put down blacktop for now and make a decision on what type of permanent stands to build there later. Barnum said, for now, people can use their own chairs and tables on the blacktop. They’ll bring in portable bleachers for the bigger events at Failor Field. She said she didn’t expect to see another large wooden grandstand being built there anytime soon.
The two-story grandstand behind home plate, and the one behind first base, that you see from South Lawrence Street will stay for now.
