ELMA, Wash. - The Ocean Crest Resort will be breaking ground on their new dining room, two years to the date after the fire that destroyed the cliffside building was extinguished. The Resort is inviting everyone to be a part of the rebuilding process as they break ground during a public celebration on Saturday, June 22nd at 1PM off of State Route 109 in Moclips.
The Ocean Crest Resort restaurant originally opened in 1963 and has been operated by the Curtright family members since. Recognized by prestigious publications such as Gourmet, Bon Appetit, Northwest Best Places, Ford Times and Wine Spectator for its unique Northwest cuisine and outstanding wine cellar, the restaurant was also listed on Wine Press Northwest magazine’s Best Northwest Wine List. Only two other restaurants in Washington state received the honor.
“When the Ocean Crest main building that housed the restaurant burned in 2011, it was a big loss to the county and a blow to North Coast tourism,” said Mike Bruner, director of Grays Harbor Tourism. “All of us in the hospitality and tourism industry have anticipated this event. We welcome the return of one of the most celebrated restaurants on the Washington coast.” more...

PORT TOWNSEND, Wash. - Set deep in the woods that blanket Washington’s Olympic Peninsula is the Northwest’s newest public utility – Jefferson County PUD, which began receiving BPA power April 1. To commemorate this event, BPA Administrator Bill Drummond ventured north for a day of reflection and celebration with Jefferson County’s commissioners, managers, staff and community.
Drummond addressed the crowd from the loading dock inside the PUD’s newly refurbished operations center outside Port Townsend, Wash.
Looking out over an audience bracketed by shiny, new state-of-the-art boom trucks, Drummond said, “I would like to congratulate all those who helped make Jefferson County PUD a reality. Your hard work has ensured that the people in Jefferson County will be served by clean, emission-free hydropower for generations to come.”
He added, “It’s not every day that a new public utility is formed. In fact, we have had only seven publicly-owned utilities form in the past 65 years.” Jefferson County PUD is the eighth.

SEA-TAC, Wash. - Two men who allegedly stole thousands of feet of copper wire from runway light towers at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport are in custody facing federal charges, announced U.S. Attorney Jenny A. Durkan. Jeramie Harms, 28, made his initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Seattle Tuesday. Timothy Lynch, 50, is in custody in King County, Washington, on an unrelated charge and will be scheduled for his appearance in the coming weeks. The theft was discovered on February 12, 2013, when a Port of Seattle employee noticed damage to the fence surrounding the runway light structures near South 188th Street and Des Moines Memorial Drive. In total, approximately 7,200 feet of copper cable was stolen from the FAA light towers, rendering them inoperable and potentially posing a threat to airline safety. more...

ABERDEEN, Wash. - Two meetings will be hosted at Aberdeen's city hall this week as the Grays Harbor Transit Authority seeks public comment on proposals to fill an $800-thousand budget deficit. Transit Authority Board member, and county commissioner Frank Gordon urged "please, anybody with an idea, anybody interested, I would love to see it full - so full there's standing room only. We need to get the point across that we need to find ways of getting funding. On the line are several budget items including weekend bus runs, portions of the 7-day schedule, and funding for the county's EMS training program. While raising bus fare wouldn't come close to filling the gap, one solution being discussed is a possible sale tax increase to the county, however Gordon points out "even if we got the wonderful people to pass a minor tax raise on sales tax, it wouldn't help us in the short term because it would be 8 months to a year before the funding would come in enough to make a difference. The first of two public meetings on the matter being held at the Aberdeen City Hall, will be Thursday afternoon at 2 PM, an evening meeting will also be held on the 25th at 6 PM. more...

Public hearing scheduled for 6PM July 9th at Aberdeen High School ABERDEEN, Wash. - The Aberdeen School Board yesterday reviewed a draft budget for the coming year. After two years in the red, board member Christi Boora said "There's a lot of hard work that goes into this, however personally I feel it's vital for us to balance, and go into the school year with a balanced budget. Amid dwindling federal dollars, and a looming but unseen state mandated investment, School Superintendent Tom Opstad said the district went from a 1.4 million dollar deficit two years ago "this year we had a budget that was $580,000 in the red. We had enrollment that was probably 3100 this year, we budget on an annual average, we ended up about 3,058. So we were higher - almost 30 above budget, which is nice because it takes away some of the red that we planned on and then maybe adds a little bit to the beginning fund balance for next year. The draft budget projects a $72,000 deficit, Opstad said he would consider some options to present at a public hearing planned for July. more...
