Remember December 2007? It was a time when our community faced disaster as hurricane force winds hit the coast. While Grays Habor PUD worked to restore power to the thousands left in the dark by the December 2007 storm, we were all reminded of the importance of disaster preparedness.  September is Disaster Preparedness and Weather Radio Awareness Month in Washington State. Saturday, September 26, 2009 Disaster Preparedness events will be held in Grays Harbor and Pacific Counties to help residents prepare for disasters. The special events will be held at the following locations:

Grays Harbor County-Event held 10am-3pm

Aberdeen Wal-Mart store, 909 East Wishkah

Pacific County-All events held 10am-2pm

Raymond:  Radio Shack, 704 Willapa Pl.

Raymond: Dennis Company TV & Appliance, 124 4th St.

Ocean Park:  Jacks County Store, 26006 State Route 103.

South Bend:  Buds Lumber, 220 W. Robert Bush Dr.

These special events, coordinated between the Washington State Emergency Management Division, Grays Harbor PUD, Pacific County, Grays Harbor County and local businesses, will feature specially priced weather radios available for purchase. Amateur radio operators and volunteers will be on hand to program the radios. Weather radios not only provide weather conditions, they also alert local residents to many immediate, life-threatening hazards, like weather, tsunamis, volcanoes, hazardous releases, and other dangerous events. In addition, your Grays Harbor PUD will be at the Aberdeen event providing information on preparing for power outages and safe use of generators during outages. We will also be handing out flash lights (while supplies last) to help you get started on assembling a disaster preparedness kit.
