David J. Curtis, 42, Shelton, was found dead tuesday morning in about 4 feet of water in Mill Creek near Piccadilly Drive. Curtis had been reported missing by family members on June 10, when he did not attend a family member's graduation ceremony. At the time family members told deputies Curtis had not been seen for approximately nine days. Sheriff's investigators launched a search operation near Curtis' campsite along Piccadilly Drive to no avail. Investigators continued the investigation but soon reached a dead end when no further leads were developed.
On July 10, deputies launched a second search for Curtis in the area of his camp along Mill Creek. This search involved about 60 searchers in an expanded search area. Again, Curtis was not located. Deputies conducted an analysis of the investigation and the search operation concluding that one more search of the area was called for. On July 28, a third search was conducted. This time the search concentrated exclusively on Mill Creek itself. Swift water swimmers were used to search Mill Creek. At about 9AM the swimmers located Mr. Curtis' body about ¼ mile downstream from his campsite. Deputies discovered no signs of foul play. According to Mason County Coroner, Wes Stockwell, the deceased was positively identified as David Curtis. Stockwell told investigators the cause of death was probably fresh water drowning. Stockwell is listing the manner of death as undetermined at this time. The investigation is continuing, but detectives say there is no indication Curtis died by criminal means.
