MONTESANO, Wash. The Grays Harbor County Sheriff's department offers the following advice on fireworks use. Chief Criminal Deputy Steve Shumate tells us the price of not knowing the law, could cost you up to a year in jail, and a $5,000 fine. Shumate said you can purchase and discharge legal fireworks as of noon on June 28th. The fireworks can be discharged until 11:00 pm that night, then from 9:00 am until 11:00 pm June 29th through July 5th except for July 4th when fireworks can be discharged until Midnight.
There are various fireworks vendors throughout the county that sell legal fireworks. Many of these vendors are ran by non-profit civic organizations. Fireworks that are prohibited include sky rockets, missile type rockets, and firecrackers. While these items can be legally purchased on an Indian Reservation, they cannot legally be transported off of the reservation. Other illegal items include M-80’s, M-100’s, Cherry Bombs, Tennis Ball Bombs, and Sparkler Bombs. These items are considered Illegal Explosive Devices. Being in possession of illegal fireworks is a misdemeanor if a person has less than a pound, and a gross misdemeanor if one pound or more. Individuals can get more information on fireworks by visiting the Washington State Fire Marshal’s website through the Washington State Patrol at www.wsp.wa.gov. Click on the Fire Marshal link and go to the Fire Prevention and Safety link. For a full list, visit http://www.wsp.wa.gov/fire/docs/fireworks/ordinances.pdf or click Read More... for local listings.
The sheriff’s department is asking the public to please use due care and caution this 4th of July weekend when discharging fireworks. Parents and guardians should pay particular attention to young children who are around fireworks. Our hope is that everyone has a safe and enjoyable 4th of July weekend.
