HOQUIAM – From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, May 6-8, the Washington State Department of Transportation will close both lanes of the US 101 Simpson Avenue Bridge while crews perform a routine scheduled bridge inspection.
During the closures, WSDOT crews will detour the 13,000 vehicles that use the bridge each day onto the nearby Riverside Bridge, which will be configured to accommodate two-way traffic.
WSDOT crews perform various inspections on the 1927 Simpson Avenue Bridge each year. This particular inspection, performed every two years, involves reviewing the bridge’s piers and supports, beams and rails, and roadway deck and superstructure. Crews will access areas under the bridge using an “Under-Bridge Inspection Truck” with a specialized arm that reaches around the bridge railing and under the deck.
Motorists are encouraged to allow extra time for their commutes during the daytime bridge closures. WSDOT recommends leaving early, carpooling or taking transit.
Drivers can also check travel conditions and learn about upcoming construction by downloading the WSDOT mobile app, visiting tacomatraffic.com, or by dialing 5-1-1.
