| Beginning at 8:00 AM on Saturday morning 6/6/09 some unsuspecting individuals were treated to a weekend pass into the Hoquiam city jail as the result of outstanding Municipal Court warrants or charges. Those who could not come up with the funds to post bail remained in the jail enjoying the sights, sounds and smells that the jail and other inmates had to offer until Tuesday June 9th when they visited the Hoquiam Municipal Court. This was the second in a series of several open jail weekends planned in Hoquiam for 2009. During this weekend session, 16 individuals were booked into the city jail. Thirteen of those were arrested on outstanding Hoquiam Municipal Court warrants and three on new charges. One additional person was arrested on a felony warrant issued in Lewis County and was later booked into the Grays Harbor County jail.
In response to a recent spike in vehicle prowls, the department also brought in our two bicycle patrol officers on overtime in order to provide extra patrols of the alleys on the Eastside as well as around the downtown business core. During these preplanned but unpublicized jail events, the jail is opened for business beginning on Saturday morning and it remains open until court on the following Tuesday. The recent jail opening should serve notice to those who have active Hoquiam Municipal Court warrants that an officer may be knocking on his/her door in the future to provide a free pass to spend a wonderful weekend in our fine facility. Individuals who want to avoid a trip to jail can contact the Hoquiam Municipal Court clerk to make arrangements to take care of their warrant. Of those arrested during the sweep, three posted bail for a total of $2,200. After court on Tuesday, four offenders were held over in custody and transported to the city's contract jail in Forks pending further court proceedings.
