Aberdeen, WA - The Lady Washington, the Official Ship of the State of Washington, and her companion ship Hawaiian Chieftain, as well as the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority, are participating in a new project to raise awareness of the state's maritime heritage resources. The two vessels and the organization are listed in the Northwest Maritime Heritage website, a searchable online database with nearly 200 historic ships, maritime museums, and other places of maritime interest in Washington, Oregon and British Columbia.
It's estimated that more than half a million people visit Northwest maritime heritage sites, maritime museums, historic vessels, lighthouses and other locations in British Columbia, Washington and Oregon every year, this new online search tool is designed to make it easier for people to find the exact type of maritime heritage sites or vessels that appeal to them. - Les Bolton, GHHSA's executive director Bolton is also co-chair of the Pacific Northwest Maritime Heritage Council, a group of Northwest maritime heritage professionals and organizations and a sponsor of the project.
Northwest Maritime Heritage provides multiple ways for visitors to find and engage with area places, attractions, vessels and organizations that provide the foundation of the Northwest's maritime heritage and culture. The site features a powerful search tool, maps showing the location of heritage sites, and easy-to-browse categories of maritime attractions, organizations and vessels. Northwest Maritime Heritage is hosted by Three Sheets Northwest, the region's only website providing daily boating news, views on maritime issues, and opportunities to meet other Northwest boaters online. Data in the site was originally collected by King County's cultural services agency, 4Culture.
