Three Shelton people are safe after a long night on the Skokomish River. The Mason County Sheriff's Office was called last night at about 10 PM when the three failed to return home. According to Sheriff's Deputies, Hannah G. Workman, 26, Billie G. Workman, 52, and Brette O. Workman, 14, all of Shelton had gone Kayaking in the Skokomish River at about 3 PM on Sunday. The three had put their kayaks into the river at about the 3300 block of the Skokomish Valley Road. They apparently intended to row to the mouth of the river. Apparently the three encountered rough water and decided not to continue on. They tried to call for help using a cell phone but could not because the phone had gotten wet and no longer worked.
Deputies were assisted in the search and rescue operations by the United States Coast Guard in Port Angeles who used a helicopter to help in the search effort. At about 2:30 AM this morning the three were located by a relative along the Skokomish River. Two of the victims were evacuated and transported to Hood Canal School where they were treated by medics for hypothermia. The third victim was escorted out of the area by the Coast Guard rescue swimmer. All three were transported to Mason General Hospital where they were treated and released.
