Hoquiam, WA - Senator Jim Hargrove (D-24th Legislative District) has decided to run for reelection for his seat in the state senate instead of pursuing the open congressional seat vacated by retiring Congressman Norm Dicks. A member of the state legislature since 1985 who represents Clallam County, Jefferson County, and parts of Grays Harbor County, Hargrove had publicly discussed the possibility of running for the open seat in the 6th Congressional District after the unexpected retirement of Congressman Dicks. After much prayer and discussion with my family and my colleagues, I have concluded that the best way I can make a difference is to continue my service in the Washington state senate. I believe I will have a greater ability to help people as an experienced leader in the Washington state senate than as a freshman in the 435-member House of Representatives. I have invested my adult life in reducing government waste and reforming the criminal justice system in Washington state, and I feel like I should see that work through to fruition. - Senator Jim Hargrove
Hargrove serves both as a leader of the Democrats "reform agenda" and as Chairman of the Senate Human Services and Corrections Committee. "Our state budget has been shrinking, our prison population has been shrinking, and criminal recidivism has steadily declined due to treatment and education programs, which have saved countless lives and saved taxpayers billions of dollars. This compassionate, fiscally responsible approach to good government has been proven to work, so I am going seek my senate seat again to safeguard the progress we've made and continue to make improvements."
