Hoquiam, WA - A 7 year old was transported to Community Hospital this afternoon, Hoquiam Police Chief Jeff Myers tells us two vehicles had stopped in the left lane of Simpson near the Hoquiam YMCA for the Hoquiam girl, According to witnesses, a Chevy Venture van was traveling at or around the 30 mph speed limit approaching the crosswalk. Myers tells KBKW the driver of the mini-van, a 33-year old Aberdeen woman, told officers she saw the first van stopped at the crosswalk and she started to slow. As she came along side of the van stopped in the left lane, she saw a little girl run in the crosswalk toward her vehicle. The driver said she applied her brakes and swerved to the right to avoid hitting the girl, but the girl hit the back driver's side of the mini-van. Myers said Hoquiam Fire responded and transported the girl to Community Hospital; it appeared she suffered non-life threatening injuries at this time- to include a possible leg fracture and facial lacerations. The overhead crosswalk lights at this intersection were apparently not activated. The driver was issued an infraction at the scene for failure to yield to pedestrian.
