Elma, WA - A sand-and-gravel operation in Elma received a 48-thousand dollar fine this week from the Department of Ecology. Ecology says Elma Rock N Redi has been violating its water quality permit conditions for several years. Violations include letting oil from vehicles and concrete slurry from broken pipes contaminate the soil. So far, Ecology says inspections, orders and even penalties haven't convinced the company to take action. The Deaprtment tells KBKW that they are hoping that escalating enforcement will be the difference.
