Tacoma, WA - The National Coalition for Public School Options (NCPSO), an alliance of parents working to protect parents' rights to access the best public school options for their children, today announced the winner of the Washington Pioneer of Teaching Award. Lisbeth Little, a sixth grade teacher from the Washington Virtual Academy, is the state award winner. This award recognizes the top performing elementary and secondary teacher in a public charter, magnet, virtual and online schools.
NCPSO President and parent of virtual academy students Lori Cooney said, “Teachers play a vital role, creating innovative and individualized techniques that enable all types of students to learn. For the second year, the Coalition is excited to acknowledge teachers who are deeply dedicated, go above and beyond, giving students every opportunity to excel outside the traditional classroom.”
“Online learning offers families a daily opportunity to share learning and life,” Mrs. Little said of her teaching at Washington Virtual Academy. “It gives parents the power to adjust the pacing of lessons to fit each student’s needs while working shoulder-to-shoulder. For students, online learning respects time; beyond lessons they need time to quietly reflect, to actively explore, to just grow as individuals. To me, it’s an honor to help families learn at home.”
Mrs. Little is one of thirteen state finalists selected by the NCPSO board to compete for the national award also announced today. Brian Lankford of Texas Virtual Academy at Southwest Mesquite, Texas and Diane Williams of Anser Charter School Boise, Idaho share the award of National American Pioneer of Teaching.
