Hoquiam, WA - At about 7:10 pm on Wednesday November 4, 2009 Hoquiam police were notified by dispatch of a recklessly driven vehicle eastbound on Simpson Avenue from 30th Street. A witness provided the dispatcher with an update that the vehicle had turned to southbound on Myrtle and had stopped in the parking lot at the Grocery Outlet, in Aberdeen. The vehicle was described as a blue Chevy pick-up.
Sgt. Krohn responded to the area and saw the vehicle leave the parking lot and drive onto Myrtle Street. Krohn followed the pick-up at it traveled northbound on Myrtle and watched it turn to westbound on Sumner Avenue, in Hoquiam.
As the pick-up traveled along Sumner the driver changed lanes without using the turn signal and then ran the right light at the intersection of 30th Street. Krohn turned on the emergency lights of the patrol car in an attempt to stop the driver but the vehicle continued along Sumner Avenue at about 35 mph. As the vehicle turned onto Riverside Avenue it accelerated to about 40 mph. The driver continued along the length of Riverside ignoring the emergency lights on the patrol car.
While the pick-up was traversing the turn onto the Riverside Bridge it drifted to the right and struck the curb with the left front tire. After leaving the bridge the pick-up turned to northbound toward Lincoln Street. It traveled along Lincoln until it turned to eastbound on Eklund where it drifted into the parking lane in the 800 block and struck a 1993 Toyota pick-up that was legally parked on the street. The suspect vehicle pushed the Toyota approximately 35 feet along the street before it cleared the Toyota and turned to northbound on Monroe Street. The pick-up then turned on Chenault Street, traveled several blocks then came to a stop near a wooded area. The male driver immediately got out of the pick-up and began to run toward the wooded area. Sgt. Krohn gave chase and eventually used his Taser to subdue the man after he was warned to stop fleeing. A 56 year old Hoquiam was then taken into custody without further incident.
The man was arrested for Felony Eluding, Hit and Run, Driving While Under the Influence, Driving While License Suspended and Operating a Motor Vehicle Without Proof of Insurance. He was booked into the Grays Harbor County Jail.
The extent of damage to the suspect vehicle (a 1983 Chevrolet S-10 pick-up) or the parked vehicle that was struck is not known. The suspect suffered only minor scratches during the incident and apprehension and was examined by paramedics of the Hoquiam fire department.
