November! You made it thru Halloween, and you know what comes next- my most favorite of all holidays- Thanksgiving! Do you know how rare it is to have a feast day devoted to giving thanks? Other cultures don’t share this uniquely American holiday. I’m not saying that the Native peoples of North America don’t frequently have second thoughts about the wisdom of having shared their bounty with the Pilgrims, but I believe it is right to always extend the hand of friendship. Better to do good and be the best neighbor possible.
So, the secret to having a stress-free Thanksgiving lies in the planning. Whether you are the host or the guest, you’ll certainly be thinking about Food. Which is where your Hoquiam Farmers Market enters the conversation. We are getting Lubbe Farms Yellow Finn Potatoes in this week, and a better potato has never been grown. Let us save you the trip to Brady, it gives you more time to plan. We also have local organic Cranberries, without which no Thanksgiving meal would be complete.
Did you know that Organic Turkeys can be ordered from Swansons? Mark says that they order twice each week, you can call and have that bird taken care of and the main event will be checked off your list.
If you’d like the extra bonus of having a locally raised organic turkey, they are raised at Harp Turkey Ranch in McCleary. The sad news is that they take orders months ahead because each turkey is then spoken for. It’s too late for this year, but you could be way ahead of the game and place an order for next year! http://www.localharvest.org/farms/M24845
Turkeys, Ducks and Pigs are lovingly raised in Grapeview, outside of Shelton. I talked with Heather and learned all about the Heritage Turkey, which has a dark meat with a livelier flavor, and also the big Tom’s with lots of white meat. She has put together a few ‘Turduckins’ for people and is willing to do more. They don’t have a website, but the number is 253-212-8016. The birds aren’t completely organic due to expensive feed, but they live outside in a beautiful healthy farm, have a happy life right up until Thanksgiving.
Speaking of birds........... The local Audubon Society will be having a yard sale at the Market on Friday & Saturday! I love a treasure hunt, and am sure that there will be things there that I can’t live without. After all, it is for a worthy cause! If you have some goodies sitting around that you’d like to donate to the sale, bring them by the market, we’ll make sure they get put into the sale.
Please try to stop by the Market on Wednesday to wish Leona Auer a Happy 99th Birthday. We’re having a party for her between 2 and 4. Leon has only recently stopped attending dances, or we’d have to have a dance band playing for the occasion! The Daily World did a wonderful story about her http://www.thedailyworld.com/articles ... aef2ded34d73956470437.txt
It’s a beautiful day- try to get outside and enjoy some of it. You won’t find fresher air anywhere, and it’s all free!
