WESTPORT, June 03, 2013 — The SBAA announced today election results for the organization's 2013-2014 board of directors. The one-year terms of the newly elected board members commenced June 1st. Election results for the new board are as follows:

Connie Newton, Secretary

Barbara Sampson, Tanya Lana, and Steve Irving, Board Members-At-Large

The new board has held a pre-term meeting, and identified it’s first two orders of business, the first being completion of plans for the Association’s new art gallery, which will run during the summer tourist season, July 4^th through Labor Day.

The gallery will be housed in the Association’s Community Arts Center, 188 W Ocean Ave in Westport. The expanded, gallery-style format differs from last summer’s Saturday Market, in that it will be open Fri, Sat and Sun, and will feature a much larger selection of arts and crafts, from more than 35 member artists.

ABERDEEN, Wash. - The Grays Harbor Community Foundation, the City of Aberdeen Arts Commission, and the City of Aberdeen officially announced today the public dedication of the new three-dimensional artwork officially named “Breaker” by Adam Kuby (Portland, OR) that has been funded by the Grays Harbor Community Foundation.  The site, a small triangle of City right-of-way between the business districts of Aberdeen and Hoquiam was recently renamed “Weatherwax Triangle” by the Aberdeen City Council. 

The public dedication of “Breaker,” that was developed with the working title: Resurgence, is scheduled for 11:00 am, Saturday, June 8^th at the site, Simpson and Park in Aberdeen.  The street will be closed for a short period, and traffic re-routed around the Weatherwax triangle, to ensure public safety and good viewing of the piece and the short ceremony.

This project was undertaken to honor the legacy of the Weatherwax family and to inspire both local residents and those that pass through Grays Harbor towards generosity and commitment to community. The artwork is intended to support both motorist drive-by and up-close pedestrian viewing experiences, and is comprised of architectural sandstone blocks from the old J.M Weatherwax High School as a re-use material, along with landscaping and lighting.

SEATTLE — The U.S. Coast Guard, Washington State Department of Ecology and Gig Harbor Fire Department responded Saturday to a diesel fuel spill in Gig Harbor, Wash.

The owner of a pleasure craft spilled approximately 100 gallons of diesel into the harbor earlier this morning. According to reports, the vessel's owner intended to fill the boat's water tank, however, water was inadvertently added to the fuel tank resulting in diesel fuel overflowing into the harbor.

The incident is currently under investigation.

Mariners are encouraged to report any type of oil, fuel or chemical spill sightings to the National Response Center at 1-800-424-8802

OCEAN SHORES, Wash. - A man was rescued within moments of hanging himself over the weekend in Ocean Shores. Deputy Chief Russ Fitts tells us at approximately 4:30PM on Sunday June 2, Police were dispatched to a report of a possible suicidal subject at a residence on Ocean Shores Boulevard. The officers were advised that the subject was talking on the telephone with the 911 center.
The subject, a 47-year old Ocean Shores man, said that he was in his garage and going to hang himself and had already placed a rope around his neck. As officers responded, dispatch advised them that the subject had disconnected from the call.
Officers Jeff Elmore and Kyle Watson arrived within a minute of the disconnected call and opened the garage door. The officers saw the man hanging from a rafter by an extension cord. The subject was still conscious. Officer Elmore quickly entered the garage and cut the extension cord, allowing officers to support the man as he fell to the ground.
Ocean Shores Fire personnel transported the subject to Grays Harbor Community Hospital for observation.

HOQUIAM, Wash. - The Grays Harbor Relay for Life raised $313,679.70 in Hoquiam over the weekend.
The Relay for Life of East Grays Harbor starts at 6 on June 14th, at the Grays Harbor County Fairgrounds.
The Relay for Life of Willapa Bay starts at the same time, at Raymond High School.
