Aberdeen, Wash. - The Spar Shop at the Historical Seaport, a unit of the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority, will turn the longest mast it has ever attempted this week at its facility in Aberdeen. The 117-foot mast, made from a single, 114-year-old Douglass-fir tree harvested near Porter in Grays Harbor County, will replace the main mast on the historic schooner Zodiac, which is based at Seattle's Lake Union. The mast will be turned on the Spar Shop's tracer lathe, the largest in North America. The lathe can handle logs up to 120 feet in length.

The mast is believed to be the longest ever turned in Grays Harbor County. The Spar Shop has also turned masts for the modern Nina, a replica of Christopher Columbus' ship, and the Fair Jeanne, a brigantine based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Car Prowls on The Rise in Aberdeen, Threefold for the month of July

Posted by David Haviland on July 28, 2009 at 11:53 am (568 social interactions)

The Aberdeen Police Department reports that we are experiencing an increase in reports of vehicle prowls throughout the city. The department reports a threefold increase in the number of vehicle prowls for the month of July, compared to the previous year.
Vehicle prowls are one of the most common and preventable crimes that take place in the City of Aberdeen. The majority of vehicle prowls and thefts from motor vehicles are easily preventable and avoidable by following these simple steps.
The Aberdeen Police Department encourages the public to secure their vehicle. This includes rolling up all windows, locking all doors, trunks, hatches, bed-mounted tool boxes, and canopies.  The Aberdeen Police Department recommends that all items be removed from the vehicle that the owner would not want stolen if they are a victim of a vehicle prowl. "If in doubt, take it out."
