Hoquiam Police warn of High-Value Burglaries

HOQUIAM, Wash. - Hoquiam Police are warning of recent residential burglaries that seem to be targetting high-end electronics Seargent Steve Fretts said items stolen include large flat-screen TV's "it's stuff that they wouldn't be able to easily come in and out of a house with"


the burglaries appear to be during times when the suspects know the residents would not be home, and it appears the targets are opportunistic, Fretts reminds residents to always lock their windows and doors when they leave, and not take chances "it's a little bit better to have your house warm when you come home, than it is to come home to an empty house."


One house was broken into in the 400 block of Emerson during logger's playday, another on Riverside Avenue two nights ago.


The Hoquiam Police Department is asking that if you observe any suspicious activity, to contact Seeargent Steve Fretts at 532-0892, extension 102 - if you see a crime in progress you should call 911

Two Fishermen and Fish Company Manager Face Thousands in Fines for Fishing Violations

CHINOOK, Wash. - Three men involved in illegally harvesting sablefish in 2005, were sentenced today in U.S. District Court in Tacoma to fines and restitution. JON SCHULTZ, 46, ROBERT GREENFIELD, 40 and KENNETH GREENFIELD, 51, all of Chinook, Washington, were sentenced on the misdemeanor charge of failing to exercise due care while trafficking in illegally obtained fish.   Fisherman KENNETH GREENFIELD was fined $16,479 and ordered to pay restitution to the State of Washington of $16,479. His brother, fisherman ROBERT GREENFIELD was fined $11,604 and ordered to pay restitution to Washington State of $11,604. SCHULTZ, an employee of Bell Buoy Crab Company was fined $10,000. All three men paid their fines and restitution in court this morning.


 

            According to the plea agreements filed in the case, in the summer and fall of 2005, SCHULTZ was the Production Manager for Bell Buoy Crab Company of Chinook, Washington. He was responsible for purchasing sablefish, also known as black cod, from area fishermen including the GREENFIELDs. Federal groundfish regulations establish harvest levels and seasons for the fish. In order to determine how much fish is being taken, fish processing facilities such as Bell Buoy are required to fill out a “fish receiving ticket” and provide a copy to the fishermen with the accurate date and weight of the catch.

Pacific County Sheriff’s Office Seeks Witnesses to Possible Abduction

PACIFIC COUNTY, Wash. - On 9-13-09, shortly after 3 p.m., deputies responded to the west end of Chinook for a suspicious call. Witnesses reported seeing a white male assault a white female and drag her in to a wooded area. The male was described as in his early twenties and wearing a white cowboy hat.

The first deputy was on scene within minutes and conducted an initial search of the wooded area. He was not able to locate any persons in the area.



With the assistance of the Washington State Patrol, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Raymond Police Department, the Long Beach Police Department, and the South Bend Police Department, deputies set up containment around the wooded area. Law Enforcement personnel then conducted a search of the wooded area. They did not locate any persons.



The United States Coast Guard assisted deputies by conducting an air search of the wooded area without locating anyone.

Coast Guard, Navy Rescue Two From Sunken Vessel off WA Coast

OZETTE, Wash. - The Coast Guard rescued two men after their fishing vessel sank approximately 20 miles off Cape of Alava, near Ozette, Wash., Tuesday.


At 12:53 p.m. the Canadian Coast Guard in Tofino, Canada, received a call from a crewman aboard the 34-foot wooden-hull fishing vessel Moonbeam reporting that the vessel was taking on water and that he and another crewmember were going to abandon ship.


The Canadian Coast Guard was able to pinpoint the location of the call and connected it to Coast Guard Sector Port Angeles, Wash.


The two crewmembers aboard the Moonbeam reported that they were donning their survival suits and were abandoning ship into their life raft.

Lady Washington to Arrive Aberdeen Wednesday; Hawaiian Chieftain Delayed

Aberdeen – The tall ship Lady Washington has set sail from Port Townsend on a three-day voyage to her home port of Aberdeen, Wash. She is scheduled to arrive at Aberdeen Landing, 710 E. Heron St., Aberdeen, on Wednesday afternoon. The exact time of arrival is undetermined.

 

Lady Washington will participate in the annual Chehalis Watershed Festival on Saturday, opening up for public tours from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., followed by a three-hour public sailing at 2 p.m. (Lady Washington will remain at Aberdeen Landing during the festival. Most festival activities are at Morrison Park in Aberdeen.)

 

Lady Washington’s companion ship, Hawaiian Chieftain, will remain in Port Townsend undergoing routine maintenance. Hawaiian Chieftain was scheduled to depart Port Townsend today, but she will delay her departure to later this week. The crew is waiting for a replacement part for the starboard propeller assembly, which must be shipped from the manufacturer in Europe. Starting Sept. 22, both ships will  close to the public for further maintenance in preparation for their next activities.
