Historical Seaport Announces $100,000 SAILING GREEN Capital Campaign

Posted by David Haviland on September 10, 2009 at 5:20 am (890 social interactions)

Aberdeen, WA - The Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority has announced its SAILING GREEN capital campaign to raise $100,000 by December 31, 2009 for the purchase of a new fuel efficient diesel engine for the tall ship Lady Washington. The new engine, as well as electrical system upgrades, will reduce the vessel’s carbon footprint.

Wind–the greenest energy source on earth–is Lady Washington’s preferred power source. But she also needs an engine to maneuver in small marinas and keep up with a 21st century schedule. Although the ship’s current 1950s-era engine has been dependable, its carbon footprint is no longer acceptable. As caretaker of the Official Ship of the State of Washington, the Historical Seaport believes Lady Washington should operate under the greenest power possible.

As summer vacation ends, long-term lane closures on I-90 begin

Posted by David Haviland on September 9, 2009 at 5:12 am (765 social interactions)

Easton, WA - Just when you thought construction was winding down for the season, crews are getting ready to kick it into high gear on I-90 after Labor Day. As part of an $18.4 million Recovery Act-funded project, WSDOT and contractor crews will replace several miles of deteriorating concrete panels in the right lane of westbound I-90, between Easton and Bullfrog Road (www.wsdot.wa.gov/projects/i90/lkeastontobullfrogwb), about 20 miles east of Snoqualmie Summit.

WSDOT waited until heavy summer travel volumes subsided to help reduce delays and congestion for travelers on this critical cross-state route. The work and lane closures are still expected to add an up to an hour to drivers’ commute times across the pass.

Farmers will have two ways to buy agricultural materials tax-free

Posted by David Haviland on September 9, 2009 at 5:10 am (787 social interactions)

Olympia, WA - Washington farmers will have two ways to continue buying certain agricultural materials tax-free after a new reseller permit system takes effect Jan. 1, 2010.

Farmers registered with the Department should use the reseller permit to make qualifying purchases – feed, seed, seedlings, fertilizer and pesticides – without paying sales tax. Farmers not required to be registered with the Department can use the Farmers’ Certificate for Wholesale Purchases and Sales Tax Exemptions. The certificate is available at http://dor.wa.gov under Get a form or publication and at any local office. The certificate is only for farmers who produce agricultural products for sale on land they legally control.

Spent Labor Day weekend home? You weren't the only one

Posted by David Haviland on September 9, 2009 at 5:09 am (648 social interactions)

Olympia, WA - It could have been the rain, wind, economy or school calendar. Whatever the reason, the result was clear. There were fewer vehicles on the road in most places for Labor Day 2009.

WSDOT collects and provides data on its Web site on routes that typically see an increase in travel over holiday weekends to help drivers have the information they need to know before they go on holiday trips.

On I-90 across Snoqualmie Pass, WSDOT counted nearly 187,000 vehicles during the Labor Day weekend, a 9 percent decrease from Labor Day 2008.

Most areas in Washington showed a similar decrease, with traffic on US 2 over Stevens Pass even lower, with 29,900 vehicles on US 2 over Stevens Pass from Friday through Monday. That’s down 6,500 vehicles (or 22 percent) from 2008.

Traffic on I-5 near the U.S./Canadian border showed a small increase from 2008. WSDOT counted 129,700 vehicles on this stretch of highway from Friday through Monday, an increase of 3,400 vehicles (or 3 percent) from Labor Day weekend 2008.
