Washington Adults Urged to Step Up, So Kids Won't Drop Out

Posted by David Haviland on October 9, 2009 at 6:12 am (666 social interactions)

TACOMA, Wash. - About 18,000 students drop out and fail to graduate from high school every year in Washington. Lowering that number is the focus of a "graduation summit" being held today in Tacoma. Educators, community leaders and after-school care providers want to convince more companies and individuals to get involved in helping kids.

Erin Jones, assistant superintendent of public instruction, is one of the speakers. She says the economy is playing an enormous role in parents' ability to be involved in their kids' education.

"These parents are trying to figure out how to survive. We have parents who have two and three jobs, and we have tons of families who don't speak English, who maybe didn't grow up in this country, and they don't understand our system. I wouldn't say that parents are out of the equation; I just think we need to engage parents differently than we traditionally have."

Posted by David Haviland on October 9, 2009 at 5:20 am (1875 social interactions)

Aberdeen, WA - The Washington State Department of Health has taken disciplinary actions or withdrawn charges against a health care provider in Grays Harbor County.

In July 2009 the Emergency Medical Technician Program granted the application of Tina Marie Morgan-Schmidt (ES60093336) and placed her license on probation for one year. She was convicted of possession of controlled substance, and escape. She must comply with terms and conditions set against her license.

Morgan-Schmidt's convictions preceded her EMT application, In May of 2009 she applied for the credentials. July of 2005 she was convicted of possession of a controlled substance, a Class C felony, and Escape in the Second Degree - also a Class C.

The department’s Health Systems Quality Assurance Office works with boards, commissions, and advisory committees to set licensing standards for more than 70 health care professions (e.g., medical doctors, nurses, counselors).

Information about health care providers is on the agency Web site. Click on “Provider Credential Search” on the left hand side of the Department of Health home page (www.doh.wa.gov). The site includes information about a health care provider’s license status, the expiration and renewal date of their credential, disciplinary actions and copies of legal documents issued after July 1998. This information is also available by calling 360-236-4700. Consumers who think a health care provider acted unprofessionally are also encouraged to call and report their complaint.

No cougar hunting during deer season in six counties

Posted by David Haviland on October 8, 2009 at 10:53 am (1034 social interactions)

OLYMPIA - Cougar hunting will be closed in six Washington counties during the statewide deer-hunting season that begins Oct. 17, according to a reminder issued today by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW).

Under a new rule approved earlier this year, no cougars may be taken during the early deer-hunting season in the six counties where a pilot hunt for cougars using dogs is scheduled to begin later this year.

The new rule delays the general cougar hunt with modern firearms until Oct. 31 in Chelan, Okanogan, Ferry, Stevens, Pend Oreille and Klickitat counties.  In all other counties, the modern-firearms season for cougar will begin Oct. 17, along with early deer seasons.

Washington, DC - Washington Attorney General Rob McKenna has been recognized by The Century Council, a national not-for-profit organization funded by distillers, for his outstanding commitment to fighting drunk driving and underage drinking.  Attorney General McKenna was one of only six Attorneys General to be honored for his ongoing dedication.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, there were 11,773 alcohol-impaired traffic fatalities in 2008, with 5,174 of them being persons between the ages of 12 and 20.  Understanding the scope of this national epidemic, this year’s award recipients joined The Century Council to help educate youth and their parents from middle school through college-aged students about responsible decision-making concerning beverage alcohol.

Sun shines on smoother, safer pavement on US 101 in Pacific County

Posted by David Haviland on October 7, 2009 at 9:29 am (834 social interactions)

RAYMOND –WSDOT’s contractor in north Pacific County delivered a smoother, safer drive in the fall sunshine as WSDOT wrapped up the US 101, SR 6 to Grays Harbor County Line paving project this week.

By WSDOT’s calendar, rainy season arrives on Oct. 1 each year. Contractors are always trying to beat the clock and finish paving projects before that deadline, since good-quality paving depends on dry, warm conditions. This year, the weather favored late-season work and Granite Construction Co. was able to work into the fall to complete paving on US 101.
