Posted by David Haviland on December 17, 2009 at 5:56 am (565 social interactions)

WASHINGTON – President Obama’s Ocean Policy Task Force released its Interim Framework for Effective Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning (Interim Framework) today for a 60-day public review and comment period.  With competing interests in the ocean, our coasts and the Great Lakes, the Interim Framework offers a comprehensive, integrated approach to planning and managing uses and activities.  Under the Framework, coastal and marine spatial planning would be regional in scope, developed cooperatively among Federal, State, tribal, local authorities, and regional governance structures, with substantial stakeholder and public input.

The Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force, which was established by President Obama on June 12, 2009, is led by White House Council on Environmental Quality Chair Nancy Sutley, consists of 24 senior-level officials from Administration agencies, departments, and offices.

Hoquiam Farmers Market News - Lutefisk Edition?

Posted on December 17, 2009 at 5:54 am (659 social interactions)

Ah, December!  The hustle, the bustle, the wonderful music, and the food.  Always, the food! Sure, you remember your most favorite Christmas gift ever (mine was a bicycle), but aren’t the deepest memories connected with food?  Some special treat that only appeared at Christmas?  My mom would buy the best dates & pecans she could find, stuff the date with a pecan half, roll in powdered sugar, and ship them off to her father in Kansas.  A labor of love, a once a year delight, a tangible way of sending part of herself.

Nancy is making Krumkake today.  If you’ve lived on the harbor for a long time, I hardly need say anything more.  Krumkake.  It looks a beautiful as it tastes, and only someone filled with love will take the time and trouble to make it.  And I’m not even Scandinavian!  Good food transcends all boundaries.  With one glaring exception Scandinavian cooking is unbelievably fine.  And what, you may ask, is that single exception?  Easy.  Lutefisk.  Honestly, why would anyone ever think that a fish soaked for months in lye was a good idea?!  I tried to give some to a ferrel starving cat once, and even he knew better than to let his tongue touch it.  Sorry, dear friends- I just wasn’t born with that gene.

Coastal Flood Advisory for Pacific County

Posted by David Haviland on December 16, 2009 at 9:26 am (565 social interactions)

South Bend, Washington – The National Weather Service, Portland Office notified the Pacific County Emergency Management Agency of a Coastal Flood Advisory, which is in effect until 2:00 p.m. this afternoon.

A Coastal Flood Advisory means that there may be minor tidal overflow along low lying sections of the southwest coast, including low lying areas within the City of Raymond.

A predicted high tide of 11.5 feet combined with strong offshore winds, significant swell and high astronomical tides due to the new moon, may produce minor tidal overflow along the south Washington coast at midday today.  The tidal anomaly is expected to be 1’ – 1.5’ producing a high tide possibly greater than 12.0’.  This may result in the closure of lanes of State Route 101, in the central Raymond area.  The National Weather Service indicated that minor flooding is expected near the city.

This event will is accompanied by a High Surf Advisory.  Seas will reach 19’ – 20’ early this evening and hold around 10’ tonight.  The large swell will cause hazardous conditions in the surf zone and beachgoers should use caution if venturing near the water.

Lacey's Shipwreck Beads Going For World Record

Posted by David Haviland on December 16, 2009 at 9:12 am (721 social interactions)

OLYMPIA, Wash. - December, 2009 - Shipwreck Beads already has the distinction of having the world's largest selection of beads. Now one of western Washington's greatest tourist attractions is setting its sights on a new world record, one that may well land Shipwreck Beads in the Guinness Book of World Records™. Shipwreck Beads will attempt to break the "Longest Chain of Beads" record, currently at 402 feet. This was achieved just last month. The goal? One-half mile of beads, or 2,640 feet.

The official record attempt will take place on December 26 at Shipwreck Beads. Shipwreck Beads' owner Glenn Vincent said, "This is a serious record attempt, but it's also a ton of fun and will benefit children in our community. We can't do it alone, so we are inviting any and all to come out and help us string this enormous chain of beads!" He continued, "We have begun working on it and will continue toward reaching our goal on Saturday, December 26. " Shipwreck Beads will be open from 9 am until 6 pm every day of the week.

"Shipwreck Beads has committed to donate $.02 to the Boys and Girls Club of Thurston County for every bead in the chain. If the record is earned, that equates to $2,600 for this worthy charity," said Vincent.
