State aims to keep pesticide canisters off Washington beaches

Posted by David Haviland on November 4, 2009 at 10:39 am (1015 social interactions)

Ocean Shores, WA - From spring 2008 through fall 2009, about 65 empty aluminum canisters were either spotted or picked up along the Washington coastline, causing concern among local residents. Some canisters still contained residual amounts of aluminum phosphide, a potent insecticide that becomes a toxic gas when exposed to air.

Information from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration indicates the canisters likely came from cargo ships exporting bulk grain to Pacific Rim nations. These ships load grain at terminals on the Columbia River as well as Grays Harbor, Puget Sound and British Columbia.

The Washington departments of Agriculture and Ecology (Ecology) are working closely with fumigation companies, the grain export and shipping industry, shipping agents and port officials to keep these unwelcome 10-inch metal canisters off Washington beaches.

November!  You made it thru Halloween, and you know what comes next- my most favorite of all holidays- Thanksgiving!  Do you know how rare it is to have a feast day devoted to giving thanks?  Other cultures don’t share this uniquely American holiday.  I’m not saying that the Native peoples of North America don’t frequently have second thoughts about the wisdom of having shared their bounty with the Pilgrims, but I believe it is right to always extend the hand of friendship.  Better to do good and be the best neighbor possible.

Shelton, WA - Sheriff Casey Salisbury announced Tuesday that the Mason County Sheriff’s Office has purchased it’s new Patrol K-9.  The K-9 is a two year old pure bred German Shepard from an eastern European bloodline that deputies have named “Rohn”

Rohn comes partially trained and was obtained from Everett Police Officer, Suzanne Eviston, who owns and operates Von Gunheide Shepherds, located in Snohomish, Washington.  Suzanne Eviston has been working with the German Shepherd breed since she was thirteen years old. At 15, she became involved in the training of police service dogs in her hometown of Vancouver, Canada, playing the "bad guy" for police agencies over the years. She carried her passion for police service dogs into her adult life and is now a Police Officer and K-9 handler.
