Montesano Community Education Asks "What would you like to learn about?"

Montesano, WA - As Montesano Community Education prepares our January class schedule, we are asking for new subject ideas, additional teachers, and additional students! What would you like to learn about? What would you like to teach others? What about recreational activities? Do you have other good ideas? Montesano Community Education November Classes:

On November 18, Learn about Reflexology and how it can benefit your health by stimulating specific reflex points in your feet. At MHS from 7-8:30PM, $8 plus $5 instructor fee.

On November 28, Holiday wreath making with your decorations. Please bring your own gloves and wire cutters. At Cindy’s Plant Stand (Elma), 1:00PM, $8 plus $10 instructor fee.

On December 5, Evergreen wreath making with your selection of the nursery’s materials. Please bring cutters and a sharp knife. At Satsop Nursery, 1:00-3:00PM, $8 plus cost of your selected materials.

Grays Harbor PUD Crews Continue to Restore Power

Aberdeen, WA -

Grays Harbor PUD crews are continuing to work to restore power to areas of west Grays Harbor County hit by high winds yesterday evening. Crews responding to outages are finding broken poles, power lines down in areas, and trees through power lines. Following is the latest on the storm recovery effort:

Northwest part of the District north of Hoquiam: Grays Harbor PUD has restored power to approximately 879 customers in the Copalis Crossing area. The PUD will be working to restore power to the Moclips area with the next hour. The PUD will then continue to work to restore power to the remaining customers in the northern part of the District. A total of approximately 3565 customers were impacted by the power outage caused by high winds yesterday evening.

Ocean Shores: Crews are still working to restore power to approximately 3899 customers in Ocean Shores. The estimated time for restoration of power is about noon today.

North Aberdeen, Wishkah, Arnold Hill, East Aberdeen areas: Outage is impacting approximately 1886 customers. The outage occurred just before 9pm. There are a large number of power lines down in the area. The PUD will be patrolling a transmission line serving the area that runs cross-country this morning after daylight to inspect the line for damage. No estimated time yet for restoration of power.

Grays Harbor City west of Hoquiam: Approximately 200 customers impacted. Outage occurred at about 9pm. Cause of the outage is a downed power line. Estimated time for restoration is noon today.

High Surf and Coastal Flood Advisories Now in Effect

South Bend, Washington – A high surf advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) and is in effect until 10:00 a.m. Tuesday for the south Washington Coast. A strong Pacific storm will generate large seas and high winds through early Tuesday. Astronomical tides will be near their monthly maximum due to the new moon. Storm surge associated with the large developing offshore low pressure system will likely be in the one to three foot range tonight and Tuesday. Locally, heavy rain from the Willapa Hills will be channeling into Willapa Bay further raising the level in the bay.

During the storm, large seas will make for dangerous beach conditions with waves pummeling the surf zone which will only be exacerbated by the prominence of the enhanced lunar tidal cycle.

Red Cross Urges Preparations for Strong Winds and Potential Power Outages

Some basic preparation and common-sense safety tips will help ensure safety during possible power outages and high winds.

Grays Harbor County Morns First H1N1 Swine Flu Death

The November 6 death of Conner Woodruff, a 12 year old student of Robert Gray Elementary School, has been linked to the H1N1 (swine) flu virus. County public health officials were notified of the positive test result Friday afternoon.

“This is a tragic death. Our thoughts are with Conner’s family and friends,” said Joan Brewster, Director of the Grays Harbor County Health Department.

“Conner died from a very uncommon complication of the flu in which the heart muscle becomes inflamed,” reports Dr. John Bausher, the Grays Harbor County Health Officer. “This is a rare event that is associated with many different kinds of viral illness such as measles, chickenpox, mumps, and influenza (flu). When it happens, it is heartbreaking.”

Conner’s death is the first in Grays Harbor County to be attributed to the swine flu virus. Public health and school officials are working together with Conner’s family to address parent, student, and staff concerns.
