Two Raymond Teachers Receive High Honors

Raymond, WA - The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards recently certified two Raymond Elementary teachers as meeting their rigorous standards. Ms. Nancy Lewis and Ms. Terri Webber recently received notification that they had met these standards and would shortly receive their certificates. Ms. Lewis and Ms. Webbers, teachers of 2nd and 1st grade respectively, have worked hard over the past year to achieve this distinction.

According to the National Board's website (http://www.nbpts.org) teachers may become certified in 25 areas.

OLYMPIA — As shoppers head to big-box stores and shopping malls on Black Friday, Attorney General Rob McKenna today offered money-saving tips for holiday shoppers.

“You’ll have yourself a merrier little Christmas if you don’t wait on rebates, read the fine print on return policies, and follow a few other common-sense suggestions,” McKenna said.

Family, community and WSDOT remember fallen co-worker Neal Richards Saturday

OLYMPIA – The Washington State Department of Transportation wants to thank the citizens of Washington and our colleagues in the public works industry for the outpouring of support for the family of Neal Richards, 42, an 11-year employee who was killed while clearing storm debris on US 101 in Clallam County on Thursday, Nov. 18.

A "Neal Richards Memorial Fund" has been set up at Bank of America – Washington. Contributions can be made at any branch.

“We appreciate the notes and words of encouragement from the public during this difficult time. We are tremendously saddened by Neal’s death. While we may never make sense of this tragic accident, I hope all of the WSDOT family will take a moment to remember Neal and his family during this Thanksgiving holiday,” said Paula Hammond, Washington Transportation Secretary.

Hoquiam Police Department Honors Senior Volunteers

Hoquiam, WA - The Hoquiam Police Department. recently recognized two senior CRIME WATCH volunteers for each having achieved over 500 hours of service to the community since the start of the program in December 2007.

CRIME WATCH volunteers Ken Powell and Joan Johnson both racked up over 500 hours of service to the department. CRIME WATCH volunteers assist the police department with residential vacation and business security checks; neighborhood speed checks; safety presentations at the schools; the business after-hours emergency registration program; the Map-Your-Neighborhood program; National Night Out; provide traffic control and security at Olympic Stadium, school games and other local events; as well as provide office support to include filing and other such tasks.

The CRIME WATCH volunteers are provided uniforms, training and a vehicle to conduct their duties. All of their time and energy is donated at no cost to the department in service to the citizens of Hoquiam.

Hoquiam Police Chief Jeff Meyers said "I am very proud of the efforts of our CRIME WATCH volunteers because they are an important part of our department as we help to keep Hoquiam a safe and strong community. To date, all of the CRIME WATCH volunteers had donated a total of over 3,300 hours of service!"

Razor Clam Digging Approved for First Week of December

OLYMPIA – Clam diggers got the go-ahead to proceed with an evening razor-clam dig starting Wednesday, Dec. 2, with an additional four-day dig tentatively scheduled to start New Year’s Eve.

Evening digs are scheduled Dec. 2-5 at Twin Harbors and Dec. 3-5 at Copalis and Mocrocks. Long Beach will be open Dec. 2, 4 and 5, while Kalaloch Beach will be open to digging Dec. 4 and 5.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) gave final approval after a series of marine toxin tests confirmed the clams were safe to eat.

Digs at all beaches will be held on evening tides, with digging restricted to the hours between noon and midnight.
