A national health report released today carried sober news for Grays Harbor County: Comparing Washington’s 39 counties on various measures of health, the county ranked near the bottom for every category, never scoring higher than 31st.
“This new study confirms much of what we already know about our health challenges,” said county Public Health Director Joan Brewster. “Our community is faced with serious and costly health problems. We hope the new data will help focus attention on areas where we can make solid improvements. It will take community-wide investments to change these rankings, but it is worth it: If we invest in our health today, we’ll be providing better lives for ourselves and our children tomorrow.”
The County Health Rankings report, produced by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Wisconsin Population Health Institute, is the first of its kind to compare all 3,100 counties in 50 states. The report is available online at: www.countyhealthrankings.org. “This report shows us there are big differences in overall health across counties, due to many factors, ranging from individual behavior to quality of health care, education and jobs, access to healthy foods and quality of the air,” says Patrick Remington, MD, MPH, with the University of Wisconsin School of Public Health.

Simon Property Group Inc. offered to buy General Growth Properties Inc. for about $10 billion as the world's largest shopping-mall operator seeks to absorb the No. 2 mall owner in the U.S. as it grapples with bankruptcy. Although shopping-mall real-estate investment trusts have been struggling with declines in consumer spending, Simon is viewed as one of the healthiest. It reported better-than-expected quarterly results last month, and although Simon's business was still hurt by write-downs and lower occupancy rates, it predicted brighter days for 2010.
Meanwhile, Simon raised several billion dollars in the latter part of 2009 looking for opportunities to take advantage of woes in the commercial real-estate sector. Simon had said earlier this month it wasn't in active negotiations with General Growth. The Chicago-based owner of 200 U.S. malls, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in April, taking 166 of its malls into the case with it. Since then, it has restructured and extended the due dates of $11.6 billion in mortgages on its malls. But it still needs to reach similar deals with holders of another $3 billion of mortgages and to pay its $7 billion of unsecured debt with either cash or equity.

LONG BEACH, Wash. (AP) - The Washington State Patrol says a suspect has been jailed in the shooting of a trooper at Long Beach.
The patrol said Monday that 45-year-old Martin A. Jones of Seaview was arrested overnight in Long Beach. He was booked into the Pacific County Jail in South Bend for investigation of assault
and attempted murder.
The patrol says investigators continue looking for evidence and asking the public for tips about Jones.
Trooper Scott Johnson was shot in the back of the head early Saturday as he was processing a car to be towed.
Trooper Krista Hedstrom said Johnson is being released Monday from a Portland hospital. He still has bullet fragments in his head, and doctors are deciding whether they can be removed.

Last year, 91 candle fires causing over $2.3 million in damages were reported to the Office of State Fire Marshal by fire agencies across the state. Before using candles to "set the mood" this Valentine’s Day weekend, residents should be aware that on average, one home candle fire is reported every 34 minutes. "Although the ambiance of candles is meant to be romantic, when handled unsafely, they have the potential to cause serious fires," says Acting State Fire Marshal Paul Perz.

What a week! Not only do we have Valentine’s Day on Sunday and a 3 day weekend to honor President’s Day, but the grand-daddy of all party days falls on Tuesday!! Mardi Gras, just saying the words makes me perk up. Not that I’ve ever really done anything outrageous to celebrate Mardi Gras, but I love knowing that the possibility is out there.
Little factoids intrigue me, so I looked into the history of the day a bit further. I knew that Lent begins on Wednesday and that fasting is traditional for the next 40 days, hence all the last minute feasting. But I never understood why eating pancakes was such a big deal. Well, you probably knew why, but I didn’t. It’s because everyone used up the last of their eggs, butter and milk before beginning the fast!
I’m here to tell you that giving up eggs, butter and milk simply doesn’t happen at the Farmers Market! We use copious quantities of all three every single day, and no apologies are offered!
