Keep the Fires Burning in Your Heart, Not in Your Home

Posted by David Haviland on February 12, 2010 at 5:38 am (502 social interactions)

Last year, 91 candle fires causing over $2.3 million in damages were reported to the Office of State Fire Marshal by fire agencies across the state. Before using candles to "set the mood" this Valentine’s Day weekend, residents should be aware that on average, one home candle fire is reported every 34 minutes. "Although the ambiance of candles is meant to be romantic, when handled unsafely, they have the potential to cause serious fires," says Acting State Fire Marshal Paul Perz.

Hoquiam Farmers Market News V-Day Edition

Posted on February 11, 2010 at 10:31 am (532 social interactions)

What a week!   Not only do we have Valentine’s Day on Sunday and a 3 day weekend to honor President’s Day, but the grand-daddy of all party days falls on Tuesday!!   Mardi Gras, just saying the words makes me perk up.  Not that I’ve ever really done anything outrageous to celebrate Mardi Gras, but I love knowing that the possibility is out there.

Little factoids intrigue me, so I looked into the history of the day a bit further.  I knew that Lent begins on Wednesday and that fasting is traditional for the next 40 days, hence all the last minute feasting.  But I never understood why eating pancakes was such a big deal.  Well, you probably knew why, but I didn’t.  It’s because everyone used up the last of their eggs, butter and milk before beginning the fast!

I’m here to tell you that giving up eggs, butter and milk simply doesn’t happen at the Farmers Market!  We use copious quantities of all three every single day, and no apologies are offered!

Mason County Sheriff Links Area Robberies

Posted by David Haviland on February 10, 2010 at 5:07 am (1207 social interactions)

Mason County Sheriff’s Detectives say they have been able to link the February 1, 2010 robbery of the Allyn Branch of Kitsap Bank to other armed robberies in the Puget Sound/Olympic Peninsula areas.

According to investigators a lone white male walked into the bank armed with a black automatic handgun and demanded money. The suspect allegedly told the teller “Don’t follow me or I’ll put a bullet in you.” The suspect got away with an undisclosed amount of cash. No one in the bank was injured. The suspect was last seen leaving the scene on foot. A K-9 Officer was later able to track the suspect to a location where the track abruptly ended with fresh tire tracks. According to detectives this is consistent with a get away vehicle being stashed near the scene.   Investigators also noted a witness reported seeing the dye pack explode and pink smoke emanate from the front of the suspect as he fled. The suspect could have sustained minor burns or have pink coloring on his person or clothing he does not want to explain.
