Weather Related Accidents Increase as Pipes Freeze

Posted by David Haviland on December 10, 2009 at 5:51 am (723 social interactions)

The Aberdeen Fire Department is is reporting an increase in call activity due to the cold temperatures.  In addition to problems with heating appliances there could be increased activity due to frozen plumbing.  The AFD would like to remind the public of the following cold weather safety precautions:

When pipes freeze we see occurrences every year in which someone will attempt to thaw a frozen section of pipe and simply use a torch to melt the ice. Never do this! Pipes freeze when warm air cannot reach them due to additional construction or creation of a confined space. Using a torch becomes hazardous as the open flame can ignite nearby combustibles or wood framing and quickly get out of control.

Attorneys general urge Federal Trade Commission to strengthen advertising disclosures

Posted by David Haviland on December 9, 2009 at 9:42 am (874 social interactions)

OLYMPIA – There’s only one government-authorized Web site where consumers can get their free annual credit report, and it’s not the one with the catchy jingles in television ads. Attorney General Rob McKenna says more needs to be done to protect consumers attempting to obtain the free credit report allowed by law.

“Credit reports are crucial in helping consumers detect whether they’ve become victims of identity theft or credit fraud,” McKenna said. “Credit reporting agencies are required to provide you a free copy of your report, but some see this as an opportunity to sell additional products. Under the law, 'free' means 'at no cost,' not 'free with a purchase'.”

Fundraising report helps donors avoid Scrooges this holiday season

Posted by David Haviland on December 9, 2009 at 9:39 am (700 social interactions)

Secretary of State Sam Reed today released his annual report that helps donors steer clear of greedy fundraising groups when making donations during the holiday season and all year-round.

Reed will join Attorney General Rob McKenna at West Seattle Senior Center today to talk to members about how to use the 2009 Commercial Fundraiser Report to make smart choices, and shared tips on how to give wisely.  Seniors 65 and older – a group that makes up about 12 percent of the state population – are particularly hard-hit by solicitors, and therefore have to be extremely careful and thoroughly research where their donations are going, the state officials warn.

Hoquiam Farmers Market News

Brrrrrrr.   Don’t even try to tell me you haven’t noticed how cold it is- even if you grew up in Minnesota, this qualifies as cold!  Remember the scene in ‘A Christmas Story’, where the little brother is all bundled up in his snow suit?  Yeah, that’s me.  Tip me over and I’ll just lay there kicking and waving my arms.

I carry a hot cup of tea with me at all times, as a hand warmer.  In case you are wondering, why yes- we do have tea and all manner of hot drinks at The Market!  Hot cocoa is a classic of course, but that won’t do for all you coffee drinkers out there.  The language of coffee aficionados is complete babble to me- might as well be an obscure dialect of Aborigine.  I catch a word here & there, but the context confuses me.  Luckily for you, I’m not the person making all those fancy coffee drinks at the market.  The folks who take your order know exactly what you want.   The aromas are inviting, and I always love to see the contented expression after the first sip.  If you’re an early bird, Nancy begins her day in the wee hours of the morning and she’s an expert Barista.  If you see the light on, even though it may be 4am, she’ll concoct your favorite coffee drink!  Unlike the infamous bikini Barista’s of Seattle, clothing is not ‘optional’ at The Market!

State Patrol to Conduct Commercial Vehicle Safety Patrols in "Operation Open Scale"

On Wednesday, December 9, 2009, the Washington State Patrol will open all 54 scale sites throughout Washington State. In conjunction with Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officers operating the scales, WSP Troopers will aggressively patrol known truck by-pass routes.

The focus of the emphasis is load securement and the prevention of collisions caused by shifting or falling loads during transit. Cargo being transported on our highways must remain secured on or within the transporting vehicle.
