Southwest Washington’s Volcano Rescue Team is better equipped for winter emergencies in the rugged Mount St. Helens region, following the Bonneville Power Administration’s Wednesday donation of a track-driven snowcat to the volunteer rescue group.

BPA delivers snowcat to North Country EMSIncreasing winter recreation has led to a rising number of search and rescue calls for the Rescue Team, including many where a snowcat would have provided faster and safer transportation for rescuers and evacuation for victims. Until now the Rescue Team usually responded to winter emergencies on snowmobiles or foot, with members providing all their own personal equipment.

WSDOT announces best value proposal for SR 520 floating bridge pontoons

Posted by David Haviland on December 24, 2009 at 5:30 am (1552 social interactions)

Aberdeen, WA - The Washington State Department of Transportation announced today that Kiewit-General Joint Venture has submitted the apparent best price and technical proposal for building new State Route 520 floating bridge concrete pontoons in Grays Harbor County.

Kiewit-General’s bid price of $367.3 million is $180 million less than the state engineer’s estimate for the project. The contractor team appears to have the best combination of bid price and technical score, which reflected proposed plans for a pontoon construction facility, how quickly the new pontoons could be built, and environmental protections. Three teams were pre-qualified by WSDOT to compete for the contract.

Public Comment Period Ending on Rainbow Creek Stream Crossing

Posted by David Haviland on December 23, 2009 at 7:00 am (580 social interactions)

A project intended to address conditions at the Rainbow Creek stream crossing of Forest Service Road 2203 at Milepost 1.6 proposes the replacement of an existing culvert and fish ladder and establish a road stream crossing structure that would provide for aquatic organism passage.

A letter signed by District Ranger Dean Millett states that while the previous comments were taken into consideration, Millett is withdrawing the previous decision because it would result in the loss of a public access point on the river.
