On Sunday night, July 28, 2013 around 7 PM, the Mason County Sheriff’s Office was advised of swimmer in distress. A group of people who were having a friendly gathering at Lake Nawatzel reported that one of their friends, a 20 year old woman visiting from the Seattle area, had swam out to a buoy, went under water and did not surface.
Civilian boats with Fire District 12 and Central Mason Fire Medics started searching for the young woman. The young woman was finally located 126+ feet from the dock and under 20+ feet of water, but swimmers could not get to her.
The Mason County Sheriff’s Office launched a patrol boat where a member of the Mason County Dive Rescue Team recovered the woman around 8:05 PM and immediately started CPR. The young woman was transported to the dock where medic personnel continued attempts to save her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
A Mason County Sheriff’s Office Chaplain and a Mason County Deputy Coroner responded to the scene. The King County Sheriff’s Office was contacted in order to personally notify the parents of the young woman of her death. Her name will not be released until all family notifications have been made.
The incident is under investigation and an autopsy will be performed this week. So, no further information is available at this time.
