Fatal Accident on Highway 8 Monday

McCleary, WA - A two car collision near McCleary last night left one person dead and two injured on Highway 8. State Patrol Trooper Russ Winger said the accident at McKnight Road happened at 1:40 in the afternoon when an Eastbound 2006 Honda CRV changed lanes into a 1997 Mercury Sable. The impact sent the Sable off the right shoulder and into a tree, and the CRV veering into the cable barrier on the left shoulder across oncoming lanes, stopping 30 feet from from the Westbound lanes, about 3 miles West of McCleary. Trooper Wilson reports the Sable came to rest partially in Wildcat Creek, the road was blocked for almost 5 hours Monday. The 60 year old Montesano woman who was driving the Sable was declared at the scene, she was identified as Karen Sawyer, her passenger suffered injuries and was transported to an Olympia Hospital. The 32 year old driver of the CRV was transported to Summit Pacific in Elma with undisclosed injuries. The State Patrol reports the cause and any pending charges remain under investigation.
