Hoquiam Eyes New Property, Alternate Route in East Hoquiam

Hoquiam, WA - The city of Hoquiam is looking to add about 320 acres to it's tax base with a purchase that could eventually offer an alternate route from Beacon Hill drive to the East Hoquiam road.
City Administrator Brian Shay tells us council next week will vote to authorize the mayor to sign a letter of intent to purchase the property from the Department of Natural Resources.
Shay said it would add to the city's timber base, and since it's adjacent to the SummerHaven property past Hoquiam Plywood, an alternate route to vulnerable areas of the East Hoquiam road could be built.
The county assessor's office values the two plots behind developed East Hoquiam at around 370-thousand combined, Shay said DNR felt an independent appraisal would come in at around the same amount. Pending approval by the council, Hoquiam could own the property in 2 to 4 months. There would be a gain in tax revenue since the state doesn't pay taxes on the property now.
