COSMOPOLIS, Wash. - Heavy rains contributing to Mill creek in Cosmopolis weakened the culvert under Mill Creek drive, almost swallowing a small Honda, a woman and two children yesterday afternoon. Police Chief Casey Stratton was one of the first on the scene; "When I first got here, I wasn't expecting to see a car sticking out of the road like that, it was halfway under."
The driver of the CR-V, Erin described what started as a leisurely drive to see the flooding at the park "I thought I hit a pothole, which I thought was strange because I didn't see [one], and then I realized that the ground was just giving way beneath us. Then we were just, we were straight up and down in the air literally. So of course I called 911 and she told me to try to unbuckle my kids, but if I took my foot off the brake the car started to slide sideways, so I just waited and kept my foot on the brake."
No injuries were reported, first responders rescued the children from the back window and the mother from the driver's seat. Chief Stratton said the Cosmopolis woman was very calm, and that the situation could have quickly escalated yesterday afternoon.
