Aberdeen Transient Struck by Bus

Aberdeen, WA - An Aberdeen transient was cited for failure to yield to traffic after he admitted to officers last night that he didn't see a school bus approaching as he crossed Wishkah street near Starbucks. Aberdeen Police Captain John Green tells us officers were called to the 1200 block of East Wishkah at about 9:10 P.M. regarding the report of an Aberdeen School District bus colliding with a pedestrian.

Investigating officers found the school bus sitting mid-block on Wishkah, near Starbucks. The officers saw that an adult male was laying on the road in front of the bus, who they found was alert and stating that he was OK.
Officers did note an abrasion to the mans left elbow, he was checked out by Aberdeen Fire Department Paramedics at the scene and later transported to Community Hospital as a precaution.

The school bus was occupied by the Aberdeen High School Volleyball team and two coaches, none reported any injuries. The students were released to their parents or guardians who responded to the scene.

Green said witnesses advised the officers that they were behind the bus and saw the man walking across Wishkah from the Top Foods area. They then saw the man try to run in front of the bus to the other side of the street. It was at this time that he was hit by the bus.

A WSP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officers was requested at the scene to inspect the bus as it required by law. No problems were reported by the WSP with the school bus.

The man, a 54 year old Aberdeen transient appeared to be intoxicated. He told the officers that it was not the bus drivers fault and that he did not see the bus coming. The investigating officers issued the man a Notice of Infraction for failing to yield to traffic at other than a crosswalk.
